Listen to The Villa Kayu Lama: A Quiet Countryside Getaway in Ubud, Bali

A Bali holiday can have a multitude of flavours/ experiences within itself. Some travellers come to party in Kuta, some come to unwind in Sanur while some come searching for something more intangible – quietude and spirituality. For the last segment, Ubud is the place to be – and Villa Kayu Lama is a compelling choice. This countryside resort is roughly 30 kilometres from Ngurah Rai, Bali’s International Airport; the ride to the resort is a welcome opportunity for guests to relax and take in the sights along the way.

A Serene Stay Amidst the Paddy Fields

Think of Balinese countryside and what immediately comes to mind are gurgling brooks and golden paddy fields dancing to the breeze. It’s a peaceful ambience, one that continues inside Villa Kayu Lama. This tropical getaway is indeed surrounded by lush paddy fields, with tropical trees and foliage in the distance.

When it comes to finding a roof for the duration of the stay, guests have four elegant options to choose from. The two-bedroom private pool villa is suitable for families wanting to get away from the humdrum of everyday life; the one-bedroom villa that’s designed for couples and honeymooners looking for an unhurried tropical holiday (and there’s a luxe version of it, too), and the deluxe room that’s perfect for solo backpackers, siblings and couples wanting a little more space to themselves.

Every room comes with pool access – some shared, but mostly private. The interiors are thoughtfully designed using pastel shades and muted hues that result in a soft natural glow. Walls have been kept simple, for the most parts, and contemporary amenities including spacious beds and indulgent ensuites have been provided.

Elevating a Villa Kayu Lama Getaway: Amenities and More

Holidaymakers at the Villa Kayu Lama usually begin their day with a filling breakfast. Like every other meal of the day here, this too is made from locally-sourced and freshly harvested produce. Couples can also enjoy a floating breakfast in their private pool, a neat little touch to kindle the spark.

Inside the rooms, guests have a spacious bed to relax in for days. It’s the perfect spot in which to spread out with one’s favourite movie/ TV series, or curl up with a book. There’s also a large living space with contemporary island-casual furniture to sink in with a cold one or a cup of tea.

Outside the villas, the spacious main lounge is a convivial meeting spot for the resort’s guests. Its high ceilings, as well as plenty of cross ventilation, keep the area cool and breezy. It’s well-suited to travellers looking to get some work done on their laptops, or sit with a snack and… watch life. The coffee shop, steps away, is a welcome change and one that gently nudges holidaymakers to take a break from their screens.

For guests with aching muscles after a day out and about or just jet lag, the resort’s spa is a promising offering. Villa Kayu Lama’s spa presents Balinese therapies and Indonesian massage techniques that leave clients feeling as good as ever.

Exploring Ubud and Things to See in Bali

While holidays are often about getting up late or just idling in bed, Ubud’s atmosphere suggests getting up early to catch the first rays of the sun as it shines upon the golden rice fields. It’s no different in Banjar Apuhan – the village where the hotel is situated, and tourists can set out on early morning walks around the hamlet or cycle on the country lanes.

Ubud’s moniker as Bali’s spiritual capital comes from the region’s scores of temples – iconic, massive, middling to just cute! Guests can and should visit the temples to get a glimpse of the local culture, traditions and have a firsthand understanding of the people and their beliefs. Plus, a temple visit is an excellent opportunity to experience the area’s take on Balinese art and architecture. Of course, there are more popular temples to visit nearby, such as those in the Elephant Cave area and the ones inside the Monkey Forest.

Ubud is also home to many yoga studios. Visitors to the town often sign up for mentor-led classes for the duration of their stay. Studios have a quiet ambience (usually!) and are designed to teach its budding practitioners the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. Open to all, what guests need to do is be mindful of the rules and regulations; and leave self-limiting beliefs at the door.

All this movement and the fresh countryside air definitely kickstart the appetite. Thankfully, Ubud’s food scene is as vibrant as its culture! There are upscale fine-dining restaurants that serve continental and Indo-French cuisine, as well as local warungs that serve taste-bombs like Nasi Campur and Ayam Sambal Matah. And because capitalism wouldn’t be denied, there are trendy, hep cafes in the area – perfect for post-meal sweet cravings.

It’s not a bad idea to set out on a leisurely stroll after a delightful meal. While aimlessly wandering and window-shopping have their own charm, holidaymakers might want to rather end up at one of Ubud’s art markets or galleries. It’s an excellent opportunity to view modern and traditional works of art, some critically-acclaimed, as well as purchase keepsakes from the souvenir shops nearby.

Discovering Ubud with a Villa Kayu Lama Stay

Bali’s Ubud is a different flavour. The air here trades the scent of salt for that of wildflowers and tropical fruits. Instead of a sea of blue, here it’s a sea of chlorophyll green. Take in the fresh air, stretch and tone up muscles with beginner-friendly yoga poses, and explore great cuisine in local warungs along the way. Moving, exploring, and eating in Ubud – a Bali holiday is as simple as that. For more on what to do… and not to do, check out our Bali travel blogs
